Question:

How do I perform Windows text searches on message files (MML files)?

Procedure:

It can be useful to search the SEG folders for text in MML files.

Current Windows versions have limits on text searches when searching for a word or phrase in the file. Only certain file types are searched by default. This can cause a simple search for text in message files (*.MML files) to fail.

It is possible to have MML files included in all Windows text searches by default. Following the guidelines in the Microsoft KB article (linked below), we modify the search utility so that it uses the plain text filter on MML files.

Warning: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Trustwave cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Make sure that you back up your Registry prior to making any changes.

  1. Go to Start | Run.
  2. In the Open field type Regedit.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Modify\create the following key and value:
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mml\PersistentHandler\(Default) = {5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}
  5. Log off and then log back on for the changes to take effect.

Notes:

A general workaround for the problem is outlined in Microsoft's KB article below:
