Configuring SpamProfiler Startup Timeouts

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave SEG/MailMarshal 6.4 and above
  • SpamProfiler
  • This article does not apply to the version of SpamProfiler originally distributed with Trustwave SEG 7.3 through 7.5.7. It does apply to hotfixed/updated installations of those versions.
  • Slow startup primarily affects unsupported versions prior to 6.7

Question:

  • MailMarshal Receiver slow to start up
  • How do I change the timeout setting for SpamProfiler update checking at startup?

Note: For issues with SpamProfiler file downloads timing out, see Q12137.

Background:

When the Receiver starts up, it attempts to check for SpamProfiler micro-updates over the Internet (http://sigupdates.marshal.com/).
  • In versions below 6.7, the Receiver does not start until the check succeeds or times out (by default, 60 seconds for each of 2 attempts).
  • In version 8.1 and above, the Receiver does not start until the SpamProfiler service has completed initialization.

Resolution:

To resolve issues with slow Receiver startup due to SpamProfiler, consider the following:
  • Ensure that each SEG processing node can access the required site (http://sigupdates.marshal.com/).
    • To configure proxy settings for this connection, in the Configurator see Server and Array Configuration > Array Properties > Internet Access tab.
  • Upgrade SEG to the latest version. In version 6.7 and above, SpamProfiler is a separate process, and Receiver startup is not delayed by SpamProfiler updates. (The full SpamProfiler update must succeed at least once after installation.)
  • You can change the timeout for the SpamProfiler check with a configuration setting, using the following procedure.
    • Caution: if you change the update timeout, SpamProfiler may not update fully and detection performance can be affected.

Procedure:

  1. On the Array Manager, edit the Registry (10.X: use Advanced Settings in the Management Console)
  2. Navigate to the SEG Receiver key:
    • In version 8.X: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Trustwave\Secure Email Gateway\Default\Receiver
    • 10.X: value names have the prefix Receiver. (Receiver dot).
    • For full details of the location for each product version, see article Q10832.
  3. Enter the following Multi-String value (REG_MULTI_SZ):
    • Value name: AuthEngineConfig
    • Value data: micro-update timeout=nn (seconds; default if not entered:60)

      Notes:

      • If the registry value AuthEngineConfig already exists, you can add this setting. To enter multiple settings in the Value data field, enter one setting per line.
      • All SpamProfiler configuration data is case sensitive.
      • Warning: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Trustwave cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Make sure that you back up your Registry prior to making any changes.
